As light crude oil resources continue to decline, oil suppliers are shifting to heavy oil resources. These oil reserves have been largely untapped and can meet the world’s increasing demand. However, heavy crude oil is more difficult to refine and produces a large percentage of “bottom of the barrel” residue. 

Therefore finding efficient options for extracting the desirable fuels from the unwanted asphaltene material is becoming increasingly attractive economically. Not only does this reclaimed oil help meet demand, but improves profitability for refineries.

Many processors are using methods such as Coking, Solvent Deasphalting, Slurry Hydrocracking, Residue Hydrotreating, Resid FCC, and Visbreaking to upgrade residual oil.
